Roy woke to the sound of a bugle and then heard the American National Anthem play very loudly through the speakerphone.
“…mmmmm…”
Roy rolled over and pulled the blankets over his head. When the song ended Roy waited ten minutes then heard a knock on his bedroom door.
“Roy.”
Roy recognized the voice immediately, it was Marth, the blue-haired prince who lived down the hall from him. Roy had no idea why his blue-haired friend started acting very “fatherly” to him sense Brawl started and Ike took Roy’s place. True Marth was twenty-three and Roy was only fourteen, but still, he found it weird. When he asked Master Hand why, he was told it was “for his own good”. It’s probably just some trick his friend Link came up with. Roy and Link were always playing tricks on each other and getting in trouble. Roy heard hard knocking on his door and snapped out of his thoughts.
“Roy! Get out of bed and get ready or your going to be late for morning practice again!”
Marth yelled from the other side of Roy’s door. Roy groaned so Marth new he heard him. Roy heard Marth walk off and rolled out of bed. He went to the bathroom and took a shower, changed into his typical uniform but didn’t put his cape on, he’d put it on latter. Roy stood in front of a mirror and looked at his reflection. His hair was messy, but he didn’t want to brush it. Roy stuck his hands on his head and ran his fingers through his hear, messing it up in a “different” way, then grabbing his sword Roy left his room. As he walked down the many halls his stomach growled, Roy clutched his belly and frowned.
“I gotta get something to eat before I go meet Marth at the training grounds.”
Roy thought. He was about to take another step but stopped when he heard a door open and then close behind him. Peach stepped out into the hallway, she immediately noticed Roy and zoned in on him right away.
“Oh, Roy!”
Roy flinched.
“Roy! Have you hared? There’s someone visiting the Manner, I think she’s coming today!”
Roy slowly turned to face the princess.
“Oh, really?”
He put on a fake smile and tried to sound excited. Peach had a nasty habit of spreading gossip.
“Yah, I hear she’s from the Fire Emblem games!”
Now she had Roy’s attention.
“Really? What gam…”
But Roy was cut when the wall clock chimed 10am.
“OH NO!”
Roy screamed.
“I’m gon’a be late! See ya latter!”
He yelled to Peach as he ran of, completely forgetting about his empty stomach.
“HEY!”
Peach put her hands on her hips in annoyance. Roy tore though the halls running into things and knocking various objects over and almost tripped over Toon Link. When Roy finally made it to the training grounds he tripped over Zelda’s bow and landed on his face, ending up with a mouth full of grass and dirt. Roy sat up and spat out the lawn. A large shadow covered him, Roy looked up and saw Marth standing with his arms crossed over his chest.
“Your late… again.”
Marth wasn’t happy and Roy new it.
“Sorry Marth”
Roy apologized.
“But Peach was… she mentioned something about someone visiting the Manner and… she said it was a girl and… well… she said she was from one of the Fire Emblem games.”
Marth looked at Roy with a blank expression and then threw his head back and laugh.
“What?”
Roy asked innocently. Marth just turned and got his sword, still laughing. Now Roy was getting annoyed.
“What?”
He asked again, picking his sword up to.
“Believe me Roy.” Marth replied. “She would never fall for you.”
“So you know who she is?”
Roy asked with large eyes. Marth just smiled, then said.
“You’ll find out. Now. Attack.”
Marth went into his ready position, back straight, sword pointed down, eyes fixed on his opponent. Roy sighed and got in his ready position.
“Your going to tell me who this person is if I win the round.”
“I doubt that.”
Marth said smiling. The two of them spent the next hour dueling because Marth didn’t have any film-duels till later that day. Finally Roy put one hand in the air and said through gasps of breath.
“Time… time out…”
Marth smiled.
“Ok… you don’t have any brawls today so you can do whatever you want.”
Roy got a big silly smile and Marth put a hand on his head.
“Ok, ok… let me rephrase that. Do what you want that’s SAFE!”
“Jet packs are safe Marth!”
Roy said still smiling. Marth just shook his head.
“You know what I mean.”
Marth said pointing a finger at Roy.
Roy just gave Marth a innocent smile. Roy spent the rest of the day reading comic books, playing video games, getting into trouble, spending time with his friends and just goofing off. Later that day Roy was sitting on his bed watching MythBusters on his laptop. There was a knock at his door.
“Come in.”
Roy said still consumed by what he was watching. The door opened and Pit flew in wearing a tuxedo.
“HIIIIIIIII!”
Pit said in a sing-song voice.
“Your not dressed yet?”
“No.”
Roy said flatly. Pit put his hands on his hips.
“Well you better hurry up and get in your tuxedo or your going to be even later than you already are.”
“Late for what?”
Roy asked still not looking up from his laptop screen.
“The monthly “Black-Tie” party, that’s what!”
Roy jumped out of his bead and his laptop fell to the floor.
“THAT’S TONIGHT?!?!”
“Yeah, and your already late!”
“AH! QUICK HELP ME GET INTO MY TUXEDO!”
Roy yelled as he struggled to get his shirt of.
“Ok!”
Pit flew to Roy’s closet and pulled out a black tuxedo. He put it on Roy’s bed then flew over to the window to wait.
“PIT!”
Pit turned to see Roy struggling with his bowtie.
“PIT! HELP! HOW DO YOU DO THIS THING?!”
Pit laughed. He went over and fixed Roy’s bowtie.
“Thanks.”
Roy said looking in a mirror.
“Ok then.”
Said Pit as he opened the door.
“Lets go!”
Pit flew out of Roy’s room and Roy followed close behind. Now at the party Roy was having a lot of fun but realized that he hadn’t see Ike all day. Roy walked through the crowd searching for his friend. Roy walked up to Marth.
“Hey Marth. Have you seen Ike? He’s not with Samus which is… unusual.”
“He’s with his sister.”
Roy looked at Marth with a confused look.
“Ike… has a sister?”
“Yes. She’s the mystery guest.”
Roy’s eyes got huge.
“Can I meet her?”
Marth sighed.
“Alright.”
Marth took Roy over to Ike, who was now talking with Samus.
“Excuse me. Ike were is Mist? Roy wants to meet her.”
Ike looked at Roy and hesitated a moment.
“She’s out on the balcony I think.”
Ike said with a hint of hesitation in his voice.
“Lets go see.”
Ike led Marth and Roy to the balcony. A girl about Roy’s height with short brown hair stood alone. Ike walked up to the girl.
“Mist.”
Mist turned and a beautiful smile ran accost her face.
“Ike!”
She ran into Ike’s arms and hugged him tight.
“Mist. There is someone here who would like to meet you.”
Ike let go of his sister and turned to Marth and Roy.
“Oh. It’s good to see you again Prince Marth.”
Mist gave a slight curtsy in Marth’s direction. Marth smiled and bowed, taking her hand.
“The pleaser is all mine.”
He leaned down and lightly kissed her hand. Mist smiled. Ike motioned to Roy.
“This is Lord Roy.”
Mist looked at Roy and slightly blushed. She curtseyed.
“It’s a pleaser, Lord Roy.”
Roy just stood there for a moment, mesmerized. He didn’t know what to do. Here stood a beautiful, no, gorgeous girl in front of him, right in front of him and he didn’t know what to say or do. Then he realized that she curtseyed and regained himself. Roy bowed.
“It’s… it’s good to meat you too… and please… just call me Roy.”
Ike and Marth didn’t know what to think of this, normally Roy was smooth, calm, cool and would tell a women to call him “Roy Boy” or “The Roy Machine” but “just Roy”? Marth looked at Ike and smiled then just walked away. Ike was about to say something but then Snake called him and Ike turned to Roy and Mist.
“I’ll be right back.”
As he walked of Ike kept a close eye on the two of them.
“Would… would you like something to drink?”
Roy asked Mist.
“Yes please.”
Roy’s face lit up.
“O… ok, I’ll be right back.”
Roy rushed of to get some punch for Mist.
“Why cant I say anything to her!”
Roy thought.
‘I’ve met thousands of women and I never had any trouble talking to theme. But then again non of them were as beautiful as Mist… or as sweet. Maybe… its cu’s I’ve never felt like this before… BUT WHAT AM I FEELING? Is it love… yes… yes I think it is!’
Roy walked up to Mist and handed her a cup of punch.
“Thanks.”
“Your welcome.”
‘Finally, I can talk to her.’
Roy and Mist stood there for a few mints, not sure what to say. Finally Roy spoke up.
“So… do you like the Smash Manner?”
“Yes. It’s very nice.”
“Yah, well, wait till you see a Brawl. But you might not like it, they can be pretty nasty.”
“Well… I don’t think it will bother me much.”
“Yah, your probably right… so just curious, what’s it like having Ike as an older brother?”
Mist just stared at Roy for a moment, not quite sure how to answer his question.
“Well… he’s very nice… but to tell you the truth, he’s a little over protective.”
Mist whispered the last part so Ike, who was standing just a little bit away from them, would not hear. Roy laughed a little louder then he should have.
“Ike, over protective? HA! That’s a new one.”
Mist couldn’t help but laugh as well.
“You’d be surprised. The only reason I‘m not in Brawl is because Ike thought it was to “dangerous“ for me.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“I mean, I got an invitation to be in Brawl and Ike said no because he thought it was way to dangerous.”
“But… what about your Dad? Doesn’t he say whether or not you can go?”
“Normally, yes, he dose. But he was away on business when I got the letter, so Ike was the one to call the shots.”
“That’s not fair!”
“Yah. But I think the real reason Ike didn’t let me join was because he was afraid I would beat him every time we dueled, just like at home.”
“You beat Ike every time you two fight?”
Roy couldn’t hide the surprise in his voice.
“Well… not every time… but most of the time.”
Roy broke out into hysterical laughter and Mist joined him. The two talked for many hours. Roy found that Mist and him shared a lot of things. They both liked a lot of the same movies, music, hobbies and various other things. When Roy noticed everyone was dancing, he bowed and put his right arm out for Mist to take.
“May I have this dance?”
Mist smiled and took Roy’s arm.
“Yes, you may”
Roy and Mist danced for a long while. They smiled, laughed and had the time of their lives. Ike wasn’t to happy when he noticed that the two of them had been dancing for quite some time and would have lost his temper when Roy put his hands on Mist’s waist and lifted her in the air if Samus wasn’t holing on to Ike’s arm. Later that night after the party was over and everyone was in bed, Roy sat in a chair by his window and stared at the stars above wondering what Mist was doing at that moment.
“She’s probably in bed asleep.”
Roy thought to himself. In Mist’s room she wrote in her diary about her day, the fun she had, the friends she had made and about the cute boy named Roy who had swept her off her feet when they danced. The next week went by fast, to fast for Roy and Mist that is. They spent as much time together as they could. Roy was in the front row every time Mist had a Guest-Dull, he cheered her on when she won and cheered her on when she lost. When the day finally came for Mist to go home, Roy could hardly stand it. He didn’t want Mist to go, he wanted her to stay, to stay forever. When her Dad came to pick her up, she said goodbye to everyone, she hugged Marth around the neck and thanked him for tutoring her while she was there. She gave Ike a big hug and he picked her up off the ground and told her he would miss her and to write him soon. Then she walked up to Roy and threw her arms around his neck, Roy rapped his arms around her and held her tight.
“Thank you Roy, thank you for being such a good friend.”
Roy felt Mist slip something into his back pocket.
“Your welcome.”
Roy didn’t want to let go of Mist. But he new that if he held her for much longer Ike would bust a casket. Mist got in the car and waved goodbye to everyone as the her and her Dad drove away. Back in his room. Roy found a letter in his back pocket. It had a return address on it, Mist’s address. He opened it and all it said was:
“Wana be Pen-Pals?”
“Pen-Pals?”
Roy smiled then went over to his desk and started to write a letter:
Dear Mist…
